Liberate Your Art!

What a great year at Liberate Your Art!
The postcards kept my mailbox happy week after week!
Here are the wonders I received....

The first card is from Andrea. What a lovely scene!

I love this one with the chairs! I am not sure of the name of the artist---I hope to find out through the blog hop! It's amazing!

This sweet honey bear is from another artist I hope to find! Isn't he great!

Hey--- I know the amazing talent who did this---my friend, JoAnna from Fiddlesnips! She is lovely, Jo!

This one is of the benches at the pentagon Memorial by Karen Walker. Such interesting lines--Amazing!!

Last, but not least, our fearless leader's card! Kat, this is great! I love it!

Thank you, Everyone for all the amazing art! I also had a great time checking out cards people received on the facebook event, and look forward to blog hopping this weekend to see more!

ps. If you received one of mine, I'd love to hear from you. :0)

In the Works

Yesterday, I met up with the art journaling group in Indy. Here are the pages I worked on.
I used Distress Ink Stains for the background and covered it with a layer of gesso.

This background is acrylics and I just started doodling and writing.

I got my postcards in the mail to Kat for Liberate Your Art!

Today's project: Keep working on another art quilt.

I ordered a lot of cards from MOO this time. I often put them in packages as a Thank You, and send them to friends. I took a few and put a set of my mixed media collage images in my shop. I am trying to get the inventory built up in there and want to do more with it.

Mail Art Book

I get a lot of cool mail art, but I was really amazed when this arrived in my mailbox today! Lubomyr, in Ukraine, sent it my way just as is! No envelope...just a little book making its way through the mail services from Ukraine to Indiana! It did really well, I'd say. I love this idea.

In between is Styrofoam. It doesn't open, but there is a message on the back.

Day 6: Raw Food ( Leftovers)

I have a fridge full of salads and things I have made all week. I decided to eat those and spend my time in the craft room room instead of the kitchen!

I gathered my beet- dyed paper I had made a couple days ago and cut, folded, and tore to do some little envelopes with messages.

I also have some mini 2 inch x 2 inch canvases I am making into tiny books, or just a fun way to send a quick letter to friends.

Cut paper to fit, folded it accordion style, and glued it into the opening. It tucks in to mail and friends can pull out their message, note, doodles, or whatever I put in there.

Sorry, no food pics today, but tomorrow I think I should go out with a bang! Dare I try "cheesecake"?
Thanks everyone for all your comments. I'm so glad you are having fun reading about this challenge. It's been great fun....and healthy!
Good thing ART is healthy too! xo

It's starting to come together...

My new Indiana home is coming together. Most importantly, the craft room is unpacked and usable! I have a big room here for it. In Washington, the guest room was doubling as a work space and my crafts seemed to be more in the living room, dining room, and all over!
It's not completely organized, but here are a few pics!

So many work spaces!

Got to work on mail art envelopes!

Here's the painting/ collage I bought at the auction in Olympia! It is called
"Woman" by Judy Cook!
I love it!

"Woman" by Judy Cook, Olympia, WA artist

More to come soon. I am still busy with all kinds of moving stuff. Also, the local shop owner I met when we were here for the interview, asked me to make Christmas ornaments to sell there. I am so excited...and busy sewing little quilted decorations. I'll post them soon.

Forgive me for not being a very good blog friend these days. I need to visit eveyone!

A Peek at my Heart

Lubomyr, my mail art friend in Ukraine, is doing this great project on her blog. She sent me a stamped envelope with a giant heart made out of stamps from the Ukraine. She is asking people to alter them and mail them back.
Here is a peek at mine. Check out her blog to see more! They are really great!

Interview with a Chicago Mail carrier

Hello! Remember, almost a year ago, when I did an interview with John "the mailman" in Milwaukee, Wisconsin?  Since then, he and I have become great friends, and exchanged lots of mail.  If you missed his interview, you can read it here.

I have been wanting to find new mail carriers to interview, and especially a woman. As it turns out, one of our talented blog friends is a mail carrier in Chicago, who happily answered my questions! And, she has some great answers!

She is also an amazing art quilter, fiber artist, and photographer.
Stop by her blog, Threadstory, and learn more about Karen's artistic side.

Karen's all ready for her day!

Here goes!! Let's meet Karen.....another fabulous mail carrier, working the zip 60656-60706, Chicago, Illinois.

How long have you been a mail carrier and what did you do before this?
I have been a letter carrier for 23 years. Right before this I worked in a photo lab.

What's the most interesting or unusual thing you've delivered
That's a hard one. There have been the coconuts from Hawaii, beach balls, baby bottles with shower invitations, A tire, And once a beautifully wrapped hockey stick. But nothing comes to mind as having been really unusual.
( And those items were not in boxes--I asked! I'd love to get a loose coconut!)

What's the nicest thing someone on your route has done for you?
People are amazing. They hand out cold water during the hot summer days. Offer umbrellas when it rains ( I have to say no to that as I just do not have enough hands! ) Gifts of gloves, scarfs, and pocket hand warmer packets. Once I was given a teddy bear in a postal uniform as thanks for all I do. The best days are the ones when you see someone excited and smiling because you just gave them the best letter or package ever!

What do you hate to deliver?
Mail that has been mangled by the machinery! The damaged pieces or magazines just make it look as if we don't care. Believe me, we care!

Do you have a favorite stamp that the USPS has issued?
The series of stamps with forest plants and animals from some years back. And of course the Gees Bend quilts!
Here's one of Gee's Bend quilt stamps

Have you ever been bitten by a dog (or person)?
Dog - yes. Bit me on the toe of my shoe and missed my toe thankfully. And once by a gargoyle...yes you read that right. A gargoyle. On a porch of a residence there was a big ceramic pot that had decorative gargoyles with gaping mouths full of fang like teeth poised along the upper edge. It had been near the mailbox and when I turned to go back down the steps I bumped into it and one of the gargoyles fangs jabbed my leg cutting me. Not deeply but a two inch gash and tore the slacks as well.

Anything about your uniform mail carriers wish they could change?
I would love to see them do away with polyester...

Has anything embarrassing ever happened on the job?
Of course! The slips and falls on snowy days where one pops back up and hopes no one saw.... Any time I make a miss-delivery ( only human after all ). But nothing that would make it to you-tube!!

And lastly, I always love to ask people this; What is something we can't tell by looking at you?
People have no idea that I am a fiber artist or that photography is something I have done for years. At work I am the 'mail lady' and while many of the people know me by my first name, that is just about all they do know about me. The conversations are usually short and consist of things like the weather and big headline news. They tell me of families and bits of their lives. For some people I may be the only person they talk with for days. I am always happy to listen for the few minutes it takes to make a better day for them. Many of the people on my route are elderly and I - as well as my co-workers - tend to watch out for them. Paying attention to mail not being taken out of the box etc. People have been saved by a carrier seeing that and notifying authorities so they can check on them if no one responds to the door bell. The people are the best part of this job.

Thank you so much Karen for answering my questions and letting us into the world of another mail carrier! Your answers made me laugh out loud at times! All the best and wishing you a long Spring!

"Oh, you get real mail."

I stop by the neighborhood mailbox on my way home from work every day. Today, there was a gathering of women around it, chatting. When I pulled out my pile, one of the women said, "Oh, you get real mail." As she said this, she held up her piles of bills. I told her I have great mail art friends and showed them Corrine's collaged card. Lots of ooh's and ahhh's! I should talk them into a mail art club!

Here's what I had today. Corrine's postcard (thank you much, cool gal!), an amazing card from my dear friend Jodie, and the fabulous cards I ordered on Etsy.

These cards are from ArboriCards, a gal in Brooklyn who gathers various botanical lovelies and makes these. Doesn't it look like the plant is real? I love them! The images carry around to the back of the card too. They are truly gorgeous, and really well priced.
Check out her shop- I'm sure you'll love it!

Close ups of the blooming willow and red witchhazel.

Hope you all have a wonderful week and lots of sun!

Mail Art Swap

I participated in a fun mail art swap with Jill from Recycled Daze. I was lucky to receive these two wonderful cards from Jill. I don't think the photos do them justice- they have the most amazing texture and feel! They will be hung in the studio to enjoy!

I also received this lovely watercolor card from Maria! Isn't it beautiful! It feels like having a wonderful page of her sketchbook or art journal.

Thank you so much ladies. XO

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. I thought it would be fun to give away a pair of Valentine fabric postcards to one lucky love!

Just leave a comment and I'll pick a winner on Sunday so I can mail them to you in time to send off to friends or lovers for V-day!

What was the best Valentine's Day you've ever had? What did you do?

Hellloooo!

Hi everyone!
Hope you had a wonderful holiday. We sure did, and I'm still enjoying the days off! Lots of time for crafting...and using my new laptop! Yes, I have my own now! Woo hoo!
I need to get caught up on all your blogs and I am busy making Valentine fabric postcards for my shop. I didn't really prepare for Christmas so I thought I would get the jump on the next holiday!
Here's a fabric and felted XO I made today, and some more felted beads--- I love the name "Midnight Ride"! Ha! Just calling them all felted beads seemed a little boring.

A Giant Hug for some mail art goddesses!

The past couple weeks have been full of surprises. I am feeling so thankful to all my wonderful blog friends, mail friends, old friends, new friends, and everyone in between. I am feeling the love and feeling grateful to know all of you.
Look at the wonderful mail that's been rolling in from the US, Mexico, England, and Germany! It's international mail love, too!

My dear friend, Valerie, who I can only think of as "craft attack" (Val, that's what you're known as in my house! hee!), sent this amazing envelope filled with a paper art extravaganza! A very cool book of tags, all with amazing birds and collage! There was also one of her notebooks which didn't make it in the pic because it went straight to my purse for use!  Thank you Val for the amazing gifts and for stopping by my blog so much. It means a lot! If you don't know Valerie yet, you must stop by Bastelmania!

Corrine at Dosfishes totally surprised me this weekend...you sly gal! I opened my door on Saturday to find a big envelope sitting on my doorstep ( a cool recycled cereal box, of course!). I am one of the lucky recipients of her wall hangings! Isn't this amazing! It is so cheerful and cool, and already hanging on my wall by the sewing machine. Such a special gift I'll cherish. I also recieved some really fun fabrics and ribbons!...for a gift for Corrine? I think so!

Today, was another day of amazing mail--- and I mean amazing! Anyone who visits Lorna at Artymess has seen and admired her fabric postcards. ( This needs a better discription than postcard---this is insanely detailed and beautiful...I would never risk this one traveling without an envelope!!) I love these rich colors and the embroidery is enviable! Also, she put in some wonderful lace and ribbons! Lorna, you are amazing! Thank you!
